All About me  |  What I’ve Learnt Since I’ve Graduated.

This week I travelled to Cheltenham for my brother’s graduation. It was an absolutely lovely time and I feel so proud of him for his achievements. It also made me think about how far I’ve come in a year, ( as I got my degree last July while I was at camp and attended my graduation last December). So I just wanted to share what I’ve learnt since graduating in the past year.

1. A university degree prepares you 0% for the world of work.

By this I mean many things. The first the time you’re at work. I got too used to 3 month summer holidays and months off at Easter and Christmas let alone the lack of actual contact hours I had to be in uni. My course had a relatively high amount of contact hours, 26 hours per week but this is just over half of a standard work week! Also the days where you only had to go in for one or two hours doesn’t compare to my 8.5 hour work days. In fact this is longer than a school day. Also, what I learnt in university is not of really any use in my current job. Bare in mind I studied Maths and Physics and currently build lasers. Even the skills I learnt during my course aren’t really of any consequence in the world of work. I do use some graph interpretation but no where near the amount of skills I thought I would.

2. The skills you learn which are useful.

These are the skills most call life skills. I learnt how to survive mostly solo. I did and still do phone my parents when I’m at a loose end but I can cook for myself and shop. I made a lot of useful mistakes at university which I feel have set me up pretty well for not. For instance, I’m useless at food shopping without a list; I always buy lots of yummy bits but with no real meals in mind. I now also like to plan out meals which compliment each other with ingredients so I have less waste. I know what to do if I get locked out of my apartment I don’t just dissolve into a mess, I sort it out.
3. Getting involved in extra circular activities is 100% a good idea.

Through these I got a job basically. It helps show you are a real person with real interpersonal skills. The skills you learn to communicate what you want and what you don’t in these social situations are priceless when it comes to work! Being able to ask someone to do something awful but will be really beneficial and them being ok with it is the most valuable skill. Also being able to voice when you don’t like something is so important!

4. This is not the end.

I worried so much when getting my degree and finding my first job that it had to be the right one. But now I’ve been working for almost a year I’ve discovered that, unless you are very lucky, no job is going to be the right one for me. I get bored easily and all jobs get boring. But also it doesn’t matter because usually, you don’t have to make much commitment to a job. Yes you don’t want to go through jobs like you do hot meals. But unlike university you don’t make a 3-4 year commitment to your job. It’s probably best to start and end up try a few to see what you do like. However, when I started where I work, the manager showing me around gave me some great advice; “don’t leave here with your CV looking the same”. So long as you continually gain skills there’s no harm done! Also going back to education is never ruled out either! I always wanted to do a masters or a PHD but at the time of the end of my bachelors degree I just needed a break but I know now I could always return to education! In fact , some places of work will even sponsor you or allow you study while you work part time!! Always worth a question!

All in all, I’m loving life and feel I’ve made great head way to what I want in life in general! I’m so proud of my brother and can’t wait for him to feel the same about his life!

My Bookshelf  |  6 Books I want to read

Welcome to my bookshelf! Were there are all things books and reading!

This time I am focusing on books I can’t wait to read. I keep finding books I want to read and there’s not enough time in my days to read them all straight away!! But here are some of my latest finds:

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying, Marie Kondo

This is recommended to me all the time at the moment! I am naturally such a border and I wish I wasn’t! I hope this book will really change my life! It claims that you can live in a clutter free home for ever by reading and following this books! Now I’ve just got to find time to start!!

The Magicians, Lev Grossman

It begins on the back with, “In a secret world of forbidden knowledge, power comes at a terrible price…”  This is recommended to all those who loved Harry Potter. A Harry Potter esque story for adults and as I am growing up a little I’m hoping this will capture all that magic and excitement again for me!!!

The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg

This book just caught my eye. I know I’m a creature of habit, everyone is. However, if I get too set in my ways I reject it and try to do something crazy. I also wish some things became habits quicker! It’s scientific research all about how and why habits form. It says on the back it covers why some can change over night while others will try to change for years but can’t. I figured this book may help me understand myself and the world around me more!

Thinking Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman.

This book delves into our subconscious and investigates the rational and irrational. Daniel Kahneman said by pointing out our minds tricks he can arm is in ways of out-thinking them. And he did win a Nobel prize for it!! It can’t really be bad!

Infinitesimal, Amir Alexander

I have always loved maths. I know that is a sentence most people don’t hear a lot but for me it’s almost like hearing people say I love icecream.  Infinity and zero have always held a huge intrigue over me. In sixth form when I truely begun to acknowledge my passion for maths, my teacher told me that all mathematicians who studied zero and infinity have either ended up in the mad house or worse! So I try not to dwell on the matters too much but can’t wait to indulge myself with this book!!
All The Bright Places, Jennifer Niven.
This is another young adult novel with so many feels but I just can’t wait to read it!! Recommended by everyone!
You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost), Felicia Day.

After reading Amy Poehlers book I want to try another biography and my blossoming admiration of Felicia Day made me think this would be a good place to start! Also, from what I know about getting, I think this book may call me in the knowledge there are other people in the world like me!!

Thank goodness it’s nearly my birthday and Christmas!! 😁

Bucket Full of Sunshine  |  Christmas in a Shoebox

I know a few people think it’s still too early to be thinking about Christmas but this is something I missed last year and it upset me and prompted me to have it in my calendar for this year since! Some of you may remember these from school like I do! Back then we called it the shoebox appeal. It is known as Operation Christmas child

Operation Christmas child is set up by Samaritans purse. It is the belief that every child should be able to enjoy Christmas. The idea is to pack a shoebox full of goodies and then send them off via the Samaritans purse to Santa, who will then deliver them to children all over the world.

As part of feeling happy, giving selflessly to others is known to be a huge booster! I’m addicted to this joy, it’s why I love Christmas so much!

It was at the beginning of December/late Nivember last year when I saw an Internet video of a school receiving their shoeboxes. Their joy and pure child like excited on their faces and all the screaming over books and pen is unbelievable. One of the children had also got a photo of the people who sent it. He ran straight to the camera and showed off the photo to everyone so proudly!

Shoeboxes are filled by you, they ask you to pack some hygiene items, school items, toys with a CE label (for health and safety purposes) and usually a ‘WOW’ item like a cuddly toy! For a full list of things to pack you can click here

Ian and I decided we would make two boxes, one for a boy and one for a girl. You stick a label to the top of your box to identify who it is for! You can download them from here

All you have to do when they are full is print off one of their labels and stick it on the top and seal with an elastic band. You also include the shipping fare of £3. You then just drop them off at a local drop centre.

You can also volunteer your time to help with the project. There are a few different ways so details on that here

PinStyle  | Bonfire Night!!

Remember, remember the 5th of November. Gunpowder treason and plot….

Hope you all had an amazing Bonfire/ Guy Fawkes night! Bonfire night is (apart from Christmas), my favourite holiday! This year it fell on a Thursday. This meant that I got two bonfires and firework displays!!

On Thursday, Ian and I met one off my colleges at a local firework display in Heaton Norris Park. There was the biggest bonfire I’ve even seen! It felt like it was the size of a house!  There was a fence all the way around it but the warmth was still so hot! There were also plenty of food cans serving bonfire favourites; burgers, chips and hot dogs!  There were plenty of rides there as well and candy floss!! A stage with live music provided some good local music too.

The firework display was actually very very good! I’ve only seen displays at much bigger events but it was definitely worth the £4.40 entrance fee!

I also managed to visit my family on Suffolk at the weekend. We had our annual bonfire and firework display which we love to go over the top with. It is always such a fun night and definitely worth spending with family.

Unfortunately, Ian was working so didn’t manage to make it to any fireworks at the weekend! And we would have squeezed in seeing fireworks with Ian’s family but neither of us made it back in time on the Sunday.

I was also enjoying myself too much to take enough photos! Here are the ones I did get:

Instead here’s a faux bonfire night made up with pins from my Pinterest. This is what I feel my bonfire celebrations look like 🙂

Ooooohh

Aaaahhhhh
I’m already excited for next year!!!

Free Range Thoughts Women working for free?

Brought to my attention from this article; today, November the 9th, is known as Equal Pay Day. This is because women working part-time in the UK, on average, get paid 34% less then their male counterparts. This means that technically they are working for free from now until January 1st.

Luckily, women under the age of 40 working full time in the UK, the wage gap is almost zero! However, the fact that it is not zero and that there is a gap of any form means that, even though the equal pay act was passed in the UK almost 40 years it is still a problem.

The UK is still ahead compared to other parts of the World. America still have no equal pay act! Jennifer Lawrence recently wrote a Lenny Letter, after the salary information for American Hustle was leaked, which highlighted how much less she earned for the movie compared to her male co-stars.

I used to be unaware of the difficulties that still cause major discrepancies for women all over the world. Having people talk about the issues present helps educate and keep the issues at the forefront of peoples minds. So for people like J-Law standing up for what she believes in even though it could damage her image and therefore her career; we should all be thankful for!

Shout out to all my DT girls and Izzy featured in the ‘cover image’!! Who are some of the strongest and hard working women! ❤

Welcome to…  | November ’15

It’s now November!!
One of my most favourite things happens in November… Bonfire Night! It has been my favourite holiday (along with Christmas!) since I can remember! I LOVE Fireworks!! and bonfires and wrapping up all warm! You always get awesomes food as well! At home we have ‘finger food’ so we can take it outside so soup in a cup and baked potatoes and mini toad in the holes (AMAZING). But also when I went to our friends last year they had an amazing feast! When you go to events and there are fair rides! Another of my favourite things!
Anyways, basically I LOVE bonfire night! and then after you get to enjoy the winter and snuggle and have adventures in the rain!

So here are the pins that I am putting in my frame this month:

Here are the photo’s I am using this month:

Photo Day | HALLOWEEN

Happy Halloween!! I hope you all had an amazing Halloween!! This year I just had a low key Halloween with Ian. We have been so busy lately so needed a rest! We did carve some pumpkins and made pumpkin soup and watched the first entire series of American Horror Story!! So here are some photos from my Halloween!!

Because we were doing a laid back holiday I didn’t dress up but I still wore my cat ears!

Ian wore his Batman onesie so he was still dressing up as well!!

Time to Carve!

The result!

The result in the dark with candles!

We bought loads of sweets! (but those pumpkins aren’t GF)

I did make a pumpkin soup! Really easy fry off some onions and garlic add some spice. Then add chunks of pumpkin and coconut milk and boil for 30mins approx. Then blitz! Served with a grill cheese of course!!

The perfect drink for Halloween? Toffee apple cider! And these amazing skull goblets from Tesco!

Hope you weren’t all too spooked this Halloween!

All About Me | October Faves ’15

October has been amazing and I have loved it! But it has been very busy for me and because I wanted to fit everything in I felt constantly rushed. Which is probably why I am so under the weather now! That and the silly gluten smartie pumpkin
😦 😥

But here are some of the things I have enjoyed the most throughout October!

SONY DSC

These are the Star Wars sweat pants I featured in my Autumn Haul. I LOVE them! I am in them as soon as I get home and just feel awesomes in them!

Gingerbread green tea

GingerBread Green Tea! it is so warming and wonderful. I have never been a fan of green tea but I have heard about the health benefits so I keep trying different varieties. I was introduced to this last year by Ian’s mum and I am so grateful! and what with the colder weather drawing in and the darker days It is just perfect!

Tesco Thai

Tesco Thai is a new ranger that has been bought out by Tesco. I have tried these and the massaman curry and absolutely love them all and these ones are Gluten Free!!  I think the Pad thai and the massaman are my all time faves!  At work everyone goes for a chippy lunch but I can’t eat there so I bring myself in a treat and that is what these have become. I now really look forward to my Friday lunch!

yoghurt

These Collective Dairy yoghurt are a new ‘discovery’ for me. They have always looked so tasty but as a student I just couldn’t afford it. I don’t know why it has taken me so long to try them since I’ve been working, it just slipped out my head. But they are even tastier than they look! The yoghurt is so thick and creamy and the purée parts are so delicious! sweet but not too sweet and full of flavour! The mango one is also top! The gingerbread is a limited edition and I am majorly looking forward to trying it!!

Blanket scarf

My blanket scarf has been my life saviour! This was also featured in my Autumnal Haul. It is just everything I wanted! So soft and big and cosy. When you feel all bunged up with cold or you just aren’t ready to feel the day just wrap this around you and everything is easier!

arrow_season_4_promo_by_fmirza95-d91qsf3

Arrow season 4 is back! and I look forward to it every week!! I love Olicity and the new costume! Yay!

jay-garrick-costume-the-flash-season-2

The Flash is also back for season 2! Woop woop! I look forward to this every week as well!!

Amy Poehler Yes Please

Amy Poehler is one of my heroes! I first saw Poehler in Parks and Recreation and I just love her. I think once people have seen her everyone wants her to be your best friend! I admire how strong and confident she is and how honest and human she is. This is the first biography I have ever read and I recommend it to everyone!

Hope you all enjoyed October and are ready for November!
