MCM Manchester Comic Con 2015

On Saturday July 25th I went to MCM Manchester Comic Con! It was at Manchester central. It’s the first comic con I’ve been to and the whole thing was very excitings. We went for the whole day, got there about 10:30am and stayed until around 5:30pm. I do get a bit nervous in social situations so to start with it all felt ever overwhelming. But my boyfriend was with me and we took baby steps; this is a process I go through to make me feel more comfortable in social situations. We started by slowly walking around so I have an internal map in my head and also I get used to the number of people around. I actually also really struggle with masks, (don’t trust people if I can’t read their face I think?!?) so with so many people dressed up, that took some adjusting too. But my boyfriend is now pretty well practiced at this kinda thing so it all settled down pretty quickly for me. Once I settled into the swing I really started to enjoy it.
There was a large room full of stalls that sold everything you would ever want from Comic Con, from shirts to replica weapons. They had stalls where you could play Yu-Gi-Oh and Hearthstone, not that I did because by the time I had built up the courage, I was running out of time for all the things I wanted to see and do! and I did play Hearthstone on my phone when I got in 🙂
There was another large room which was treated as a meeting room for people. There were a few catering stalls dotted about. The GF options were limited to salads which isn’t the best selection but we bought food with us as we didn’t know what was going to be available there. There was another room with the meet and greets in and there was a theater where the panels were held.
We did go to see the arrow panel with Katrina Law and Karl Yune, (Nyssa Al Ghul and Maseo Yamashiro from the CW Arrow series). It was the first panel I’ve been too and I loved it! Katrina Law is now one of my new heroes!! She made me laugh loads and came across as very eloquent and intelligent. She spoke very well about women’s rights and about being a LGBT Icon even though she is happily married to her husband. She did it all without putting anyone down or coming across ‘preachy’. I just found her very inspiring.

We then stayed to watch the Cosplay Masquerade. I am fairly new to the whole Cosplay scene. My initial thoughts on Cosplay were not wholly positive but I then found out that my boyfriend is actually kinda into it; it was an almost awkward conversation. But I didn’t really know anything about it and I don’t like having an opinion on something I know next to nothing about. Also if its something that he likes I want to be a part of it so he told me what he likes about it.  I started seeing it more for what it is. And it is some peoples hobby and if they love it and it makes them happy then it’s clearly cool!
So obviously this masquerade was the first one I’ve ever watched and I had no idea what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised.  I see it more of an art now, some of the effort and attention to detail is incredible and awe worthy. It is like being transported to that specific world of fiction.

From the little I have now been exposed to the Cosplay community I can now see how amazingly Inclusive and supportive it is. It’s just people enjoying themselves and others also getting enjoyment it. They just respect each other completely, and seeing that kind of thing in the world just makes me happy 🙂
I really enjoyed the whole day and felt like the experienced opened up my world more than I ever could have imagined it would. I cant wait to go again next year!! 🙂
